The IRS makes adjustments to taxpayers Federal Income tax returns for any number of reasons. Some of these changes may not be correct. The IRS often obtains information from employers, banks, and other sources, that is not exactly what you have entered on your tax return. You will receive a notice of change and you must respond to this notice. This is not an audit, but you might want to seek help just the same. The IRS correspondence can be very confusing and you may not totally understand just what the IRS is trying to do. What the IRS is doing is increasing your tax liability.
Take the case of a taxpayer who received a Form 1099 (MISC Income) from a company he represented as a commission sales person. Commissions are $35,000.00 and the taxpayer files his return, pays the taxed and all is well with the world. The company sends a second Form 1099 (MISC Income) to the IRS because the PO Box number of the company was changed. Same form, same taxpayer, same company and the same income $35,000.00.

A year or so later the taxpayer is faced with explaining why he reported $35,000.00 when the IRS knows he earned commissions of $70,000.00. What’s the tax on $35,000.00? Enough to make you sit up and take notice. This could also trigger an audit of the taxpayer’s tax returns for year of the change, the year following the year of change and the year previous to the change.

It will pay you to discuss any change notice you receive with a professional before agreeing with changes proposed by the IRS.

You will be able to tell from the IRS letter that you are being audited. There will be a person to contact (IRS Agent), telephone number to call, an appointment message and a request for some information with the letter.
If you are notified that your personal Income Tax return is being audited you need to seek professional advise before you make any contact or communication with the IRS. At least have a professional review your returns, check for accuracy and make sure that you have evidence for all income and expenditures. They can then tell you what you can expect from the IRS.
